相传清朝康煦年间,上郑村有一位李姓村民夫妇,老年才得一女,据说一出世就满室飘香,长大后容貌出众.当朝皇帝听到电白出一漂亮的香女,就派一个姓曹的大臣来上郑村,要招香女入宫,香女听说后非常伤心,香女知道,如果答应被招入宫中,那将永离家乡父老,如果拒绝,那将惹来满门操斩之祸,香女想来想去,心一横,答应去了.曹大人问香女,要坐车还是骑马上京,香女说一不坐车,二不骑马,要坐船.这里没有河又不通海,那能坐船呢?但曹太监还是答应了.这样只有开河,香女心想:要官家把河到村边,救活一方,自己就是死了也值得.太监一道命令,要当地的官绅捕捉成千上万的民夫,开一条可通航的河流,千千万万民夫,不分日夜,挑呀!挖呀!加上连年大旱,颗粒无收,民夫饿死,累死无数,香女非常伤心,整日面河而哭,这时河快要开通了,香女看着滚滚的河水流向田庄,久旱的庄稼得救了,香女纵身一跃,跳落河中......

香女河的传说和共青河的现实

风和日丽，我们来到了广东电白县的共青河畔。
共青河全长一百四十华里。人们叫她幸福河。从电白县沙琅江起，一路跨山越岭，流经中南部林头、坡心、七径等七个公社，哺育着这一带十八万亩农田。我们迎着璀灿的阳光，从七径公社沿着比周围耕地要高得多的堤岸走去。尽管因为正在修浚河道，上游的水闸还没有打开，但是，下游一部分主流和支流，仍然碧波荡漾，流水潺潺。成群的鹅鸭，在渠边田角的水里嘻戏。一垅一垅的坡地上，爬满了越冬番薯的绿色枝蔓，新播下的稻秧一片嫩绿，初春才种植的木薯、黄豆，也长有七、八寸高了；远处和近处，不时都见到社员们挥动锄头开荒，赶着种春番薯和春花生。看到这一派生机勃勃的景象，我们几乎想像不到这沿河两岸，原是“三日不雨小旱、十日不雨大旱”，被称为“瘦鬼垌”、“生铁坡”的贫瘠地方。
这一带的人们，每逢谈起共青河，便自然而然地扯起香女河来。这是一个令人辛酸的故事。
原来，七径公社新屋仔、马鹿、山岚这一带，都是黄土丘陵，长年累月遭受旱灾，大片大片的土地不长庄稼。大约五百年前，这里遭受了一次大旱灾，人们吃光了草根，啃光了树皮。正是叫天天不雨，叫人人无法的时候，明朝皇帝却下了一道“选美”的圣旨，要挑选民间美女入宫。七径公社这地方有一个上靖村，当时有一个姑娘名叫李香女。相传她聪明过人，美貌出众，而且每逢农历初一、十五，全身便发出阵阵郁香。于是，便被荒淫无耻的皇帝选中了，马上要香女入宫。香女出身农家，对农民、对乡土都深深热爱，她不想入宫，但又不敢违抗圣旨。在这悲痛交加、左右为难的时刻，她突然慷慨地说：“入宫，得有一个条件。”官员问她是什么条件。她说她一不坐轿，二不乘车，三不骑马；因为坐轿腰会痛，骑马头会晕，乘车不习惯。她要坐船，而且要从自家的门口上船。“选美”官员向皇帝一说，皇帝马上下了一道命令：开河。
香女的目的达到了。她想像着干枯了千百年的土地，马上就有河水滋润，不由得欣喜若狂，完全忘记了自己的悲痛。有一天，她到开山劈岭、挖凿运河的工地上去看究竟，她发现乡亲们是在皮鞭和棍棒的驱策下劳动，而且许多人为开渠挖河丧失了生命。她觉得自己错了，她原想叫家乡有一条河水灌地，没想到反而给乡亲们带来了灾难，在悲愤交加当中，她竟跳井自杀了。
这是传说。但却真实地反映了这地方“十年九旱、民不聊生”的苦况；也生动地说明了人们对于水的渴望和理想。
在这黄土丘陵地带开一条河，的确不是一件易事。这里虽然东有大海，西有沙琅江，但江和海都在百多里、几十里以外。远在农业合作化的初期，不少人就想把沙琅江的水引过来，但当时社小、人少，只能打井、开塘、挖沟，根本无法动工开河。1958年大跃进、人民公社成立以后，人们的理想才实现了。凿河工程开始，沿河两岸公社的社员都扛着十字锄、铁锹赶来了。到主流放水那天，人们一见河水哗哗地顺流而下，都激动得热泪盈眶。
七径公社党委第一书记吴超俊告诉我们：自从开了共青河，社员们生产的劲头可大啦！今年春节前几天，天气奇寒，深夜里还冻起霜来，眼看翌晨太阳一出，几千亩冬种番薯就要被冻死。公社党委连忙通知各个大队抢救，一个小时以后，全公社上万社员就像蜂群似的飞满田间。他们迅速把共青河水灌进田里去保暖，又浇水洗去薯叶上的冻霜。几小时功夫，就把全社六千多亩冬种番薯浇过水，一亩也没有冻坏。
七径公社许多地方，过去每年从春耕开始，就挖渠车水直到夏收夏种，有的地方连食水也得到十多里外去挑。有时眼巴巴盼到稻子吐穗扬花了，因为车不到水灌溉，结果又是颗粒无收。现在就变了样，吴超俊打开笔记本给我们念了几笔账：全公社二万二千多亩水田，很多都实现了自流灌溉。由于不用车水抗旱，节约了大批劳动力来改良土壤，开垦荒地、扩种杂粮等等。
解放前，在那“有种无收，有做无食”的灾荒岁月，不少人被迫得卖儿卖女，逃荒他乡。这两年，连逃荒几十年的老人也携同儿孙陆续回来了。马鹿村社员黄炳留兄弟二人和一个寡嫂，解放前被生活迫得到外地挑担和打工；寒冬里也只能用破蚊帐当被盖，烂麻袋做衣裳。现在，我们到他们家里作客时，只见人人衣服光鲜，床上都有新蚊帐、新被褥。屋里屋外干干净净，还养着大群肥大的鸡鹅。像这样的家庭，在村里还远不算是顶好的。过去，外乡的姑娘都不肯嫁到这一带来，近两年来，生活好转了，许多单身汉，甚至早已打定主意当“五保户”的，也都高高兴兴娶了新娘。马鹿大队今年娶回的三十多位新媳妇，就有不少是来自县城镇和其他鱼米之乡的。大队党支部书记黄炳珠，是个爽直而又有风趣的人，他在结婚登记处问过一个新娘：你生长在城镇，为什么偏偏爱来我们这里“落户”？这位新娘大大方方答道：这里田地多，水利好，只要勤劳动，那怕日子过得不美！
从共青河畔往回走，我们绕道从香女河遗址经过，这条干渠已经大部分改成农田，长起了绿油油的庄稼。啊！五百年前的香女河，它给人们留下的只是辛酸、悲愤的回忆；而今天的共青河，却为我们子孙万代，创造了幸福、美好的未来。
